County and San Martin Neighborhood Alliance reach Agreement
South County Airport Hangar Project to Proceed

SAN JOSE, CALIF.- Today, the County of Santa Clara and the San Martin Neighborhood Alliance (SMNA) announced that a settlement has been reached in the South County Airport hangar project litigation.

The four major points of agreement will allow the construction of the airport hangar project to proceed as designed.

Major Points of Agreement

  • Responding to concerns expressed by SMNA, the County has given assurances that if any proposal is made to extend the runway at South County Airport, the County will not use the planes occupying the four largest hangars as a basis for justifying the proposal.

  • Although an analysis of the noise impacts of the hangar project was conducted as part of the CEQA process for the Hangar Project, the County has agreed that at such time as the Airport Master Plan is updated and the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for that master plan is prepared, the County will reanalyze the noise impacts of the Hangar Project and include that analysis in the Updated Airport Master Plan EIR.Landscaping will be planted around the hangar project and the fire suppression water tank.

  • The lawsuit will be dismissed and each party will bear its own attorneys' fees and costs in the matter

As part of the South County Airport hangar project, the County also will build a water tank to provide water for fire suppression at the airport. The water tank will be located in oak tree area to help screen it from view. Care will be taken not to endanger the trees. The remaining area around the trees will continue to be available for public use as anticipated in the Airport Master Plan. When the fire suppression tank is operational, the County will agree to its mutual aid use for the regional and community fire fighting needs of the California Department of Forestry (CDF) and the County Fire Department.

In an effort to work together more closely and provide a venue for regular early community participation, the County Roads and Airports Department will send a monthly report to the San Martin Planning Advisory Committee regarding activities, plans and proposals concerning the South County Airport. A staff member from the Roads and Airports Department will attend those meetings and be available for discussion. The community input will be summarized in the Roads & Airports Department's bi-monthly staff report to the Airports Commission.

As a part of the settlement, both parties have agreed that this news release represents the extent of their comment on this issue.
